One fundamental thread in every healing journey is this sense of empowerment. A feeling that the life that you're living resonates with who you truly are. And that, whenever these two don't align, you have agency to bring it back to a flow of alignment and authenticity. Our life force doesn't lie.

Endometriosis in my 20's was what brought me to acupuncture and Chinese medicine. It was a debilitatingly painful condition that was rooted in many ignorant behaviors, an overindulgent diet, and a disempowered self-image... Yet I didn't know how to seek help until it was already so dire. The entire right side of my body was numb and there were days I could barely walk. I finally went to a bloodletting acupuncturist who repeatedly pulled black blood from my abdomen. Getting the rotten blood out was only the beginning, though. I had to learn to relate differently to myself: learn to value myself, pace myself, ask for help, say no to overexertion and self-sabotage, dog for my needs, and accept many parts of me that I vehemently rejected in very subconscious ways.

The self-discovery that I embarked on in my 30's (from meditation retreats, kirtans, to NVC weekends, to weekly circling events) became medicine for me as much as acupuncture school. I started to understand  the importance of relationship; that all of life is relationship... starting with my relationship to self, and how this is mirrored in how I relate to others. "Know Thyself" as a cornerstone of healing, then becomes a foundation for meeting the mystery of life. And so this is something I offer as a healing balm to my patients as much as the needlework and other "therapies" in my treatment sessions.

Probably the most powerful pivot for me was just simply learning to open up and receive love. I am indebted to my embodiment guide Nicola Amadora and my meditation guide Daniel Brown who laid the powerful groundwork for receptivity. I also had the amazing fortune of studying Chi Nei Tsang (internal organ Daoist bodywork) under Karin Sorvik and Rob Renahan (both students of Mantak Chia), whose practices helped my body expand its capacity to transmit and receive love. This is a cultivation that has majorly influenced my treatment style, as well as my mentoring approach on lifestyle, diet, and qigong.

I founded Acupuncture for All Seasons in 2009 in New York City where I practiced Chinese Medicine for 13 years, before moving to North Carolina in 2022, to serve as an apprentice in Mountain Gardens (an off-grid botanical garden at the base of Mount Mitchell that features organically grown Chinese medicinal herbs).

Since relocating to North Carolina, I have been reconnecting with soil as the deeper well of healing for all our human and non-human communities. Earth is the integration and synthesis of all our relationships -- with the plants, the animals, the minerals, and elementals. It's an evolutionary path. The commitment I have made for my life is to be a steward of sacred and aligned relationships, which I have come to see as the true basis of all medicine.

I look forward to supporting you with your health goals. Email me at acupamela@gmail.com.
